35 picture columns, 25 photographers, 71 works: Most residents of Frankfurt associate the B level of Hauptwache train station with people in a hurry, trains nearly missed, and a hint of grimy drabness. From 11 January until 10 February 2022, we will transform it into a different kind of runway in cooperation with the Professional Association of Freelance Photographers and Film Creators (Berufsverband Freie Fotografen und Filmgestalter e.V.), its British sister organisation (AOP) and local transport operator Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main (VGF).

The “RUNWAY” exhibition showcases large-scale contemporary fashion photography with strong personalities, new perspectives and playful poetic moments. The idea behind the exhibition is to interpret fashion in all its facets and turn clothing into an experience – after all, no other medium can transport fashion with the same intensity as photography. We documented the set-up with a camera and asked Alexandra Lechner, spokeswoman of the BFF board, three quick questions.

Why did you pick the B level as the exhibition venue?
By choosing one of the major transportation hubs in Frankfurt, we are making the exhibition accessible to more than just a limited expert audience. Everyone who comes this way will see the pictures. This location inspired us right from the start. A functional place like Hauptwache station is transformed into a kind of runway. After all, fashion affects us all. RUNWAY also brings the Fashion Week to the beating heart of the city.
How did the jury proceed when selecting the works?
The five-person jury met at a photographic studio in Frankfurt in September. All 555 submitted photos were laid out. The members of the jury walked along the rows of pictures together, narrowed down the selection, and then made a final decision together at the end. While our focus was on imagery, of course, the subjects shown were even more important. Fashion photography is a reflection of the respective societal developments and often pre-empts them. Our selection was based neither on the names of the photographers nor on when the photo was taken, but on what the picture represents.
What characterises fascinating fashion photography?
Fashion photography does not merely depict clothes that are to be sold. It gets fascinating when it becomes an expression of an attitude to life. Fashion photography can also be political, it can take up zeitgeist and reinforce issues. The most interesting pictures are created whenever photography can freely interpret fashion. These are the pictures that outlive the respective fashion and become iconic.
